Dams and other water reservoirs form a key component of the hydrologic cycle, providing water for agriculture, power generation, human consumption, industrial use, etc. Dams may also act as a flood control measure by providing a barrier that impounds water. Aging dams have raised enhanced awareness of dam safety and many agencies have regulations in place to preserve dam safety. HELM engineers have significant expertise in performing analyses of dam failure scenarios using sophisticated two-dimensional modeling. The modeling scenarios include both sunny day failure as well as dam crest overtopping scenarios. Using the modeling results, HELM will develop dam inundation maps and customized emergency action plans for potential dam failure scenarios. In addition, HELM can design flood warning mechanisms to aid in planning of flood response.
