Riparian areas are among the most ecologically diverse and biologically productive land masses on earth. Effective floodplain and watershed management that implements a “whole-systems approach” that works with the interconnected dynamics of water, soil and living organic systems can significantly promote healthy riparian corridors. HELM implements this “whole system approach” to create sustainable treatments that work with urbanization occurring in the watershed. HELM can provide functional design treatments within riparian areas as well as within upstream developments. The treatments within riparian areas may consist of tree plantings, rock or log vanes, plant removal, ground cover, and induced meandering. Treatments within urban developments may include various best management or integrated management practices that would decentralize the management of stormwater by slowing, capturing and treating it as it flows through developments before discharging to riparian corridors.
